Historical Information

Ulysses S. Grant seemed an unlikely prospect to achieve much in the Civil War. Afer resigning from the army in 1854 under a cloud that left him with a reputation (largely undeserved) as a heavy drinker, Grant had tried his hand at several civilian occupations with indifferent success. Rejoining the army when war broke out in 1861, he demonstrated a quiet efficiency and determined will that won him promotion from colonel to brigadier general by August 1861. Grant earned a reputation as an aggressive commander. After his many victories, President Lincoln promoted him to lieutenant general and Commanding General of the Army in March 1864. With Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Grant proved as charitable in victory as he was unbending in war. There would be no revenge to poison the peace. "The Rebels are our countrymen again," Grant announced.
