Historical Information

“Jazz,” applied to music, came out of late nineteenth-century New Orleans. The gifted F. Scott Fitzgerald first used it as the name of an era in his Tales of the Jazz Age (1922), and he was its most literary historian. Silver Ghost, Autumn Leaves might be an illustration for The Great Gatsby, that desperate figure who, in a sense, symbolized the Jazz Age – the Great Jay Gatsby, whose wealth was as obscure as his societal credentials.

In the early 1970s Mort Künstler received a commission from limited edition print publisher Frame House Gallery of Louisville, Kentucky, to paint a series of classic automobiles. He began prowling antique car shows for his research, and met the owner of the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost depicted in this painting. Mort hatched the idea for a Gatsby-inspired painting to feature his new friend’s car set in front of another friend’s estate on Long Island’s famed North Shore Gold Coast. The artist and his wife Deborah were the models for the main figures in the painting.
