Historical Information
He looked and talked like his country: raw, rugged, and earnest. His concern for humanity, his never-failing belief in the people, made Abraham Lincoln among the most American of Americans. At the same time, he evolved into an astute political leader with the deft touch to mold and direct the nation through a horrible war.

Lincoln's apotheosis came at Ford's Theater. The assassin's bullet that killed him put a halo about his head. What followed was a paradox of history. The most unpopular man ever elected president became the most popular man of all the nation's greats.

Years after the war, U.S. Grant wrote of Lincoln: "I knew his goodness of heart, his generosity, his disposition, his desire to have everybody happy, and above all his desires to see all the people of the United States enter again upon the full privileges of citizenship and equality among all."

Today, in a Washington monument that has with time become a temple, Abraham Lincoln broods over the nation he gave his life to preserve.
