Historical Information

Hitler sought to conquer England through airpower. From July to October of 1940, thousands of German bombers blasted English cities, airfields, and industrial plants. Royal Air Force pilots, flying Spitfire and Hurricane fighters, were outnumbered but stubbornly brave. They destroyed 1,900 German aircraft before the country's plans for invading England were abandoned. This Battle of Britain was the first major defeat of German military forces. Prime Minister Winston Churchill would say of his British airmen's success: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
