Guns of Gettysburg, The




Most Civil War field guns had an effective range of a mile or less and were of dubious accuracy at any distance greater than half a mile. They were therefore most devastating at close range. Firing grape or canister (like a giant shotgun) against charging infantry, Union artillery helped break up Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg in this manner.
