Historical Information

In the winter of 1775, the British government sent troops to Boston to intimidate the local population. The Second Virginia Convention met at what is now called St. John's Church in Richmond in March 1775. On March 23, Delegate Patrick Henry appealed for united support of independence and presented a proposal to raise a militia. His speech closed with the famous words "I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
