This Day in History
Prairie Schooners West

On a day like today in 1841...

In the 1840s, as the fur trade began to wane, missionaries and prospective settlers ventured into the West. In the spring of 1841, seventy men, women, and children left Independence, Missouri, bound for the Far West. This was the first wagon train to travel all the way from Missouri to the Pacific. The route they followed had been laid out by the Mountain Men.
