This Day in History
Maxwell Taylor's Secret Mission

Ambassador Taylor Resigns in Vietnam
July 8, 1965

On this day in 1965, Ambassador Maxwell Taylor resigned his post in Vietnam. Taylor wanted the country returned to civilian rule after a military coup overthrew President Ngo Dinh Diem in November 1963. Taylor disagreed with Secretary of Defense McNamara and General Westmoreland on their strategy for the country and opposed the employment of United States combat troops in Vietnam.

The painting above shows Maxwell Taylor during one of his World War II missions.
