Take Her Down!

Take Her Down!
February 7, 1943

During World War II, in a nighttime action, the U.S. Submarine Growler was attacked on the surface and rammed by a Japanese patrol boat. While on the bridge, Commander Howard W. Gilmore gave the order “Clear the bridge!” Gilmore, wounded and unable to go below deck, then gave the order “Take her down!”

Gilmore made the ultimate heroic sacrifice by ordering an immediate dive. The submarine, badly damaged by the collision with the Japanese gunboat, was saved. In giving up his life for his ship, Commander Gilmore followed the highest traditions of naval service.
