This Day in History
Willie Mays

On a day like today in 1954...

Willie Mays was born May 6, 1931. He played centerfield for 21 years for the Giants in New York and San Francisco. In 1954, during the first game of the World Series with the Indians, Mays made an incredible outfield play for which he has always been remembered. The score was tied late in the game and the Indians first baseman, Vic Wertz, hit a long drive to deep centerfield. Mays turned his back to the plate, raced to the wall, glanced up at the last minute and pulled the ball in over his shoulder. The Giants won the game and swept the series.
