Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

Gorilla and Baby

...Mort Künstler painted this gorilla and baby in 1974?

It was done as a series of 38 paintings of wildlife varying from lions to garter snakes. They all showed the adult with its offspring and were commissioned by Scholastic Book Services to be used as finger puppets. Künstler still has most of the originals. His children had selected some to hang in their rooms. Now they are hanging in their children’s rooms!

The gorilla is the largest ape of all. It lives in Africa. Most males are about 5 1/2 feet tall and with an armspread of 8 feet. The very biggest male gorillas can weigh 600 pounds. Females are smaller than the males. A gorilla band is made up of an adult male, one or two females, their single babies, and some half-grown gorillas. They move every day - foraging for food - usually walking on all fours on the ground. Some gorillas may live for 25 years.
