Did You Know...?
Little Known Facts About Mort Künstler

Jaws for MAD Magazine

...Mort Künstler painted this Jaws satire for the January 1976 cover of MAD Magazine?

Künstler turned MAD Magazine down the first time they asked him to do a cover because he thought it would be bad for his career to be associated with a “comic book.” When his daughter, Jane, found out, she talked him into doing one the next time they called. He didn’t have to wait long to be asked again. Künstler accepted a commission with the proviso that he could sign it with the pseudonym “Mutz.” This satisfied Jane, her siblings, Künstler and MAD. MAD subsequently asked him to do all future covers, but he turned them down. He never did another one. Steven Spielberg now owns the original painting. It doesn’t seem to have hurt Künstler’s career!
