The Grand Review

They finished with a mock saber charge while shotted cannon fired in salute. Secretary of War Randolph applauded the scene from his private train, as Stuart and his staff bowed and saluted their amazed guests. As they rode to the evening’s formal dance, Stuart and his Southern cavalry seemed invincible. Then, four days later, Union cavalry crossed the Rappahannock River and attacked his camps near Brandy Station.
