General John Buford

Gen. John Buford, US, Born

He sided with the North, and as an experienced cavalry officer, he was promoted to brigadier general in 1862. His most valuable service occurred in the opening hours of the battle of Gettysburg, when his cavalry held off superior Confederate forces until Northern reinforcements arrived and occupied a strong defensive position.
