The Civil War, Day by Day

Last Leave

Last Leave

The soldier’s life was a melancholy one; songs and stories always evoked thoughts of home. North and south, few young men had been away from home before the war. The Confedereate soldier could rarely get time away from the army. In the Northern armies, furloughs were granted for re-enlisting, and gave soldiers a chance to return to their loved ones for a few days. For so many, it was the last time they would ever see home.
