Charleston Threatened

Confederate General Hardee, in Charleston, feared an attack on the city and proposed evacuation to Jefferson Davis, who wanted to delay this action. Davis left the final decision to Hardee and General Beauregard. On February 17th, Charleston was evacuated and Fort Sumter fell into Federal hands.
